Outcome

Zero downtime during mains power outage

The Challenge

Mains power loss represents one of the most significant yet under-addressed vulnerabilities in conventional site surveillance. When the power supply fails, the majority of CCTV installations cease operation entirely,  cameras disengage, recording is interrupted, and alarm transmission to monitoring centres is suspended. The result is a complete loss of visibility during the exact period in which a site is most exposed.

This vulnerability is well understood by those who target unsecured sites. Power outages, whether caused by mains failure, deliberate interference, or planned works, create predictable windows of opportunity for unauthorised access, theft, and damage.

For our client, the risks were considerable. The site contained substantial high-value plant, materials, and project equipment, with the potential financial exposure of a single incident running into five-figure sums. Beyond direct loss, secondary impacts, project delays, insurance implications, and operational disruption, represented a further significant liability.

The client’s requirement was therefore clear: a surveillance system capable of maintaining continuous operation regardless of mains supply status, providing uninterrupted protection across all conditions.

Fixed CCTV cameras installed at elevation

The Solution

Platinum Asset Protection designed and installed a fixed CCTV system in which power resilience was treated as a core engineering requirement rather than an optional accessory. Battery backup capability was integrated into the design from inception, ensuring continuity of operation under all foreseeable supply conditions.

Key components of the deployment included:

  • 1. Fixed CCTV cameras — high-resolution units positioned to deliver full coverage of the site perimeter and identified high-value asset zones.
  • 2. Integrated battery backup — purpose-specified to maintain camera operation, recording, and signal transmission throughout extended mains outages.
  • 3. 24/7 ARC monitoring — verified alerts transmitted directly to our Alarm Receiving Centre for immediate operator response.
  • 4. Site-specific configuration — the deployment was engineered around the site’s specific risk profile, asset distribution, and operational requirements — no standardised templates were applied.
Installation and commissioning

The Test

Shortly after commissioning, the system was subjected to a real-world operational test when the client’s site experienced a loss of mains power. Under a conventional CCTV installation, this would have resulted in an immediate and complete loss of surveillance capability for the duration of the outage.

The Platinum Asset Protection system continued to operate without interruption.

out on site installation and system commissioning

Outcome

All cameras remained operational throughout the outage. Recording and live monitoring continued without interruption. Verified alerts were transmitted to the ARC as designed. Site security was maintained at full capacity for the duration of the mains supply failure.

Key Results

  • Continuous camera operation — maintained throughout the period of mains supply loss.
  • Uninterrupted 24/7 monitoring — with no break in coverage or recording.
  • Verified alert transmission — preserved to the Alarm Receiving Centre.
  • Zero operational downtime — and no resulting site exposure.

Conclusion

Conventional CCTV systems are designed around the assumption of continuous mains power — an assumption that fails precisely when the consequences of that failure are most severe. Sites that depend on uninterrupted surveillance to protect high-value assets cannot afford this design compromise.

Platinum Asset Protection takes a different approach. Resilience is treated as a foundational design principle rather than a supplementary feature, with every system specified, installed, and tested to maintain operational integrity under realistic failure conditions. The result is a surveillance solution that performs not only under normal operating conditions, but at the moments it is needed most.
